Introducing The adidas SL 72 RS Trainer

Following on from the release of the adidas SL 72 RS trainer earlier this year, the celebrated 70s runner now arrives in a Formel 1 inspired colourway of ‘core black’ & ‘solar yellow’.

Who doesn’t love a bit of trefoil nostalgia? This latest re-release of the adidas SL 72 trainer is exactly that. Combining the silhouette of the celebrated 70s runner, the adidas SL 72 trainer, with the original colourway of the adidas Formel 1 trainer from 1978. Originally released in celebration of the Munich Olympics in 1972, the concept of the SL 72 was to create one of the lightest running trainers at the height of the Dassler brothers’ bitterly brotherly rivalry. As the world started going crazy for all things running & trainers, the SL72 couldn’t have hit the sportswear store shelves at a better time. The SL 72 was a gamechanger on the elite running tracks & one of the very first silhouettes to feature the now legendary trefoil logo. SL an abbreviation of “Super Light”, marked the next chapter for “die marke mit den 3 streifen” but would also find its spiritual home on the terraces of Elland Road & Edgeley Park in the late 1970s & early 1980s. As far as classic 3 stripes go from the golden era of one-upmanship & groundbreaking running technology, it really doesn’t get much better. The adidas SL 72 trainer now lands in the updated RS model in a Formel 1 inspired ‘core black’ & ‘solar yellow’ colourway for November 2024.

Drawing inspiration from the SL 72 OG, the RS model was released earlier this year as part of a revival release of the early 1970s runner. With a slightly chunkier sole, the RS stands for ‘re-shaped’ & features classic nylon uppers with suede overlays in ‘core black’. Contrasting 3 stripes in ‘solar yellow’ feature to the sidewalls in the signature perforated cut alongside an extra grippy outsole & a ‘solar yellow’ midsole. Other highlights include the trefoil logo to the tongue tab & heel as well as ‘SL 72’ branding in gold foiling to the lateral sides.
