After an 8 year hiatus, the Nike Air Zoom Spiridon makes a grand return from the swoosh archives dropping in the iconic OG ‘Sport Red’ colourway.
The Nike Air Zoom Spiridon OG trainer couldn’t really scream late 90s “sneaker style” much more if it tried. Coming from an era of adidas Popper pants, the Spice Girls & state of the art swoosh sneakers, the Air Zoom Spiridon was a testament to Nike’s Zoom Air innovation of the mid to late 90s. Originally released in 1997, the Air Zoom Spiridon followed in the footsteps of the Air Zoom Alpha from the previous year marking the next chapter of Nike’s Air Zoom story. Just like Air Max had been originally designed for running, the Air Zoom Spiridon was also geared up solely for runners with its Zoom Air technology & lightweight mesh uppers. But as the 90s swoosh story usually goes the silhouettes were just as big on the streets. The very same can be said about the Air Zoom Spiridon OG trainer which now arrives in the iconic ‘Sport Red’ colourway after an 8 year hiatus.
With running heritage at its very core the Air Zoom Spiridon was actually named after Spyridon Louis who won the 40,000m marathon at the very first (modern) Olympic games in Athens back in 1896. The concept that anyone who bought the late 90s runner could run like an Olympic champion was clever Nike marketing at its very finest. Now revived for December 2024, the Steven Smith designed swoosh silhouette now returns in its original late 90s colourway.
Featuring lightweight mesh uppers in ‘metallic silver’ with a textured navy mudguard & reflective piping the Air Zoom Spiridon stays true to the OG design. Contrasting swooshes in ‘sport red’ adorn the sidewalls alongside mini swooshes to the front lateral sides and tongue for the all important Spiridon style.
