Recently revived from the archives the New Balance 1000 trainer was originally released back in 1999 as a performance running trainer.
Back in 1999 (here in the UK) everyone was wearing combat pants, going crazy for flat pack furniture & whistling the tune to ‘Sweet Like Chocolate’ from Shanks & Bigfoot. As Y2K (IDST…if you know you know) loomed there was a sense of the unknown. Before the internet, and social media would literally take over people’s lives, computers were strictly dial up modems with these crappy static webpages, MSN messenger and if you were lucky, you could watch the music video of your favourite band on CD Rom if it was included on the single. Times were very very different. As a new Millennium drew closer, Cliff Richard went full on bible basher with ‘Millennium Prayer’ and everyone thought the world was going to self implode with a computer virus. Y2K nostalgia has come back in big way of late with the younger generations lapping up the whole late 90s & early noughties trainer trends . The New Balance 1000 trainer really taps into the whole Y2K thing and is now treated to a very special re-release for 2025 in some new & exclusive colourways.
First released in 1999 the 1000 had the stereotypical “does what it says on the tin” New Balance mentality featuring neon eyelets & a sculpted sole unit. Long before the days of seaside packs & Teddy Santis as creative director, the 1000 was designed as a performance running trainer where performance running meant exactly that. Following in the footsteps of classic NB’s silhouettes, the 1000 had all the hallmarks of a late 90s/early noughties runner. Following a collaboration with Joe Freshgoods and an archive revival courtesy of Teddy Santis, the New Balance 1000 has gone down an absolute storm with all its Y2K nostalgia.
Now updated in some exclusive colourways, the 1000 features inverted mesh uppers with leather overlays for that futuristic “millennial” look. Other highlight include ABZORB cushioning running through the heel & forefoot, an extra grippy rubber outsole and the all important ‘N’ branding the sidewalls. The New Balance 1000 trainer is available now in a selection of exclusive colourways from JD Sports.
