Shares in The North Face & Vans owner, VF Corporation (VFC) were down 7% yesterday as JPMorgan put the global apparel & footwear company on its “Negative Catalyst Watch” list.

Following the sale of Supreme to EssilorLuxottica for $1.5 Billion earlier in the year, the financial outlook at The North Face & Vans owner VF Corporation still looks challenging. Shares of VF Corporation (VFC) took a 7% hit yesterday as JPMorgan put the apparel giant on its “Negative Catalyst Watch” list. JPMorgan analyst’s have also reduced their estimate for VF Corporations fiscal 2025 EPS (earnings per share) citing “wholesale challenges” particularly with The North Face and “ongoing traffic headwinds” across its other brands which includes Timberland, Vans, Napapijri & Dickies. Fiscal 2025 earnings per share were cut to 65 cents, 35% below previous Wall Street analysis, with an 8% decline in revenue than the previous year. Shares in VF have also lost around 3% of their value since the beginning of 2024.

So what’s actually causing the challenges currently with VF Corporation? Well consumer confidence is probably at some of its lowest levels we have seen in the last 10 years. That been said there are still winners & losers in the apparel & footwear game. Continued wholesale challenges for VF could point to last years warmer than usual autumn weather as retailers were reluctant to take further stock, even though retailers sign off forward orders 6 months prior to stock arriving. From a brand competitor & “hype” consumer perspective perhaps The North Face aren’t quite the dominant force they were in the pre-COVID era of the late 2010’s. That’s not to say the brand is “sale rail” & not “grail” by no means but other brands like Arc’Teryx & And Wander, to name a few, have certainly tapped into the whole outdoors performance market over the last few years.
